Why can't someone be a Grimm and a parent? That was never stated in the show. Otherwise, Marie wouldn't have been able to raise Nick and he wouldn't have been able to raise Kelly. Plus, we already know that Kelly and Marie weren't abandoned by their father and he trained them himself since they got their sight at a much earlier age than Nick. Not everyone needs to make the same choice as Kelly and even she left Nick in the care of another Grimm so just being one wasn't the problem.
Futhermore, Grimms can't be singled out. You can ask how any wesen can raise children. The Spinnetod comes to mind since their lives are severely cut short unless they murder people. I suppose the show could've delved into this more but the WotW format didn't really allow for it. There are plenty of wesen that have compulsive traits, that overwhelm them more so than a Grimm's does, but we see them with families. Being a wesen or Grimm doesn't preclude them from having a family.
Anyone asking, why would a Grimm or a Wesen or any other person would want to be a parent makes you wonder what lies between their ears. Here is a concept, It’s in our DNA. It’s in the DNA of the Grimms and Wesen. If it wasn’t. We would not be in existence. It’s what makes us reproduce. I guess some must have been listening to musical scores in their sex ed classes in school and missed the part that drives us to replicate!

IMO, we were all born with free will. If Grimms could ignore what they saw and were always wearing sun glasses, days, nights, indoor, outdoor., they could avoid practicing their vocation. But for the most part they probably chose to follow their heritage. I know I would have and so would most.
You know you are OLD, when you see the Slide Ruler you used in college selling in an ANTIQUE SHOP!!
