So is the answer really, "oh hey, guess what? you can forget the mental institutions and your violent past because there was a reason for it all. You're a grimm."
You forget that Nick, his mother, and his aunt had a relatively normal life. They made the conscious choice to become abnormal when they decided being a grimm was more important than anything else.
Trubel didn't ever have the choice of deciding what was best for her. She didn't even have the choice of at least trying a normal life. Nick and Juliette are at fault for that. Big time.
The mental institutions were telling her she was crazy and had to be locked up. Nick was telling her she wasn't and wouldn't. She can't stop being a grimm anymore than a wesen can stop woging under strenuous circumstances. She's had years of having to defend herself from those that attacked her. Now she knows and understands why she's had several tough years. I can understand why she didn't just fold her hands and do nothing. Nick could have told his aunt that being a Grimm wasn't in him and simply go back to being a cop and pretend he wasn't seeing what he saw. For a while he tried a modified version of this stance and failed. Trubel didn't have the luxury of being a newly formed Grimm seeing wesen for the first time. All she's known is years of killing just to stay alive. Once you become a Grimm, you can't switch it off. How do you expect someone with Trubel's background to suddenly become passive after six or seven years of killing? What kind of therapy could she go though to undo years of trauma while trying to force her to turn a blind eye against those wesen who are doing awful things?
I actually think it's probably easier to quit being a grimm if the person has a desire to do so. Marie held off being a grimm while raising Nick. It seemed Kelly was prepared to hold off being a grimm while raising Diana. It's more than likely a sure thing she at least held off being a grimm for a time while raising Nick.
It was really only Nick who talked about being a grimm, and he said he wanted to be a grimm. He never mentioned any compulsion forcing him to be a grimm.
I just think Nick and Juliette were grossly unfair to Trubel. There were many alternatives out there for her besides the life of a grimm.

You can not judge what is normal for a wesen by what is normal for a human. From the first episode Monroe story was how hard it was to deviate from his normal nature. Even with his making a constant effort. There where times when he would slip back most times out of necessity. Even Nick who started of with a normal life. Ended living the life with wesen values. He went from arrest the guilty to kill of be killed. How many times did he say the badge was getting in the way. How many times did others say he needs to handle the situation as a Grimm.
The show has made the point wesen thinking is not a choice. Even Adalind who for Nicks sake decided to not be a hexenbiest. yet when things got tough the beast would come out in full force.
I don't consider Monroe the consummate wesen who's trying to make it as a human. Monroe made it plain from day one that he was enamored with Nick the grimm and was willing to do anything for Nick the grimm. That included woging upon request and killing upon request.
I still believe the majority of wesen don't woge, even in anger. I believe they just want to live their lives in peace, working alongside humans without humans knowing any different.
