I actually think that if they had fleshed this out more, they could have had a mini-series within the series. Instead we had ridiculous substories, such as the monster who's been around for eons and managed to acquire every magical rod and staff through the ages, break them up and superglue them together. Except for the one piece that Nick has, naturally. Oh, and Nick's stick can't go back through the mirror. Why??
