I can talk about GOT in another thread to prevent this one from being derailed but the writing on that show has taken a nosedive. It's not just about bad things happening but how they're brought about. There are things that have happened in the last couple of seasons that have no logical explanation. They can emotionally effect people but they also used to make sense as well. Doing both is good writing but only trying to hit an emotional beat without it being earned by the characters and the narrative is exploitative. I can give you a dozen reasons why I think GOT's writing is awful and how the writers contradict themselves constantly.
