There is once again contention regarding the character of the Grimm characters. The characters must be able to discern good from evil. For example, in 3.04 Nick risks his own life to save Elly from drowning. Hank thought they had both drowned, but Nick's Grimm super breath saved the day. The NBC recap describes it as an act of "heroism."
There are many instances of Nick's selfless heroism. His motivation is to do good. Renard only acts in his own self interest. At times Renard's activity happens to coincide with good, so he may accidentally appear good.
You can make you own assessments of the characters, but if it seems hard to justify that if Nick was good then he would have let Elly drown.

Was Elly the cute blonde or the cute brunette? Nick has a thing for helping/saving cute girls. I doubt his actions would be the same if a manticore was drowning. Again, it's that complete weakness of character showing.
Two bums tied Elly to an anchor and threw her in water to drown. Nick risked his life to save her. I say that was selfless heroism. I see a decisive display of Nick's strength of character.
When did Nick leave a helpless manticore to drown?
