Hi Izzy,
Your comments about Nick’s character (or lack thereof) provide fodder for debate. From the L.A. Times, http://herocomplex.latimes.com/tag/grimm/ appears “Captain Jean Renard of “Grimm,” played by Sasha Roiz, is easily the most mysterious character on the NBC show. A royal heir, a Wesen (half-Zauberbiest) and a police captain, he, like the show’s hero Det. Nick Burkhardt (David Guintoli), has his feet planted firmly in both worlds.” I see that as a comparison of Renard and Nick indicating Nick is the “show’s hero.” Please feel free to disagree with Jevon Phillips and the L.A. Times. I generally disagree with news media opinion, but IMHO Phillips is correct about the Grimm Show Hero.
Nick, Hank and Wu agreed to handle the Royal Massacre “off the books. Kenneth is more than “an arrogant human with no special abilities.” He murdered Nick’s Mother in cold blood. They outsmarted Kenneth and captured him. Wu brought Kenneth to the warehouse at Nick’s request. Hank and Wu remained outside at Nick’s request. The NBC recap reads:
Kenneth is brought to an abandoned warehouse outside Portland by Wu. There, he comes face to face with Nick. Nick at first tries to question Kenneth, but when he's only met with taunts about his mother and Juliette, he turns to a more physical method of persuasion. As Wu and Hank listen along outside, Nick and Kenneth trade blows. In the end, Kenneth is no match for a vengeful Nick, who slides a blade from one of his Grimm weapons into Kenneth's throat and proclaims, "For my mother."
Nick defeated Kenneth using hand to hand combat. Are you criticizing Nick for his choice to execute the murder of his Mother? Would you think more highly of Nick if he had strangled Kenneth by a choke hold? There are two different types of chokes: Asphyxiation and-Strangulation. Which do you prefer Nick to use? Note that later that night, Nick does put a choke on Hexenette, so he did have that technique available for Kenneth. His clemency toward her would have resulted in his throat being ripped out, but Heroine Trubel saved him.
In regard to cold-blooded murder, Google pulls up “done or acting without consideration, compunction, or clemency.” Again, IMHO, Nick did consider the circumstances of his Mother’s murder and decapitation. I see no compunction in Kenneth’s taunt “I'd always heard how badass you Grimms were, but your mother was a complete letdown. Of course, I did have the element of surprise on my side.” Did Nick show some clemency in not decapitating Kenneth?
I deplore violence in the real world. Unfortunately people with ISIS mentality do not hesitate to decapitate. That is cold-blooded murder. Keep in mind Grim is fantasy and the action of the show includes some raw violence. Fantasy violence is entertaining. Picture a Road Runner cartoon.
Only four days until 5.01 the Grimm Identity.
