Nick and Juliette probably did express their love at one time with the intent to commit to one another. Or they may just have been playing house and conning each other for the five years we saw them. Perhaps at the time of Juliette's transformation, they shrugged and realized they were simply became room mates, nothing more.
But the fact remains. If Juliette wants to pack up and leave, she's free to do so. If Nick wants to fork Adalind, he can. He's not cheating on Juliette because he's not committing adultery. He can tell her that any day of the week and there's nothing she can legally do about it. If Renard and Juliette want to get together for a quick one, they can. They're consenting adults with no legal ties to anyone else. Nick cannot stop her, nor can he turn around and dissolve their union legally because there was no union to begin with.
This is exactly the case. As pointed out, Juliette turned down the engagement - she walked from the commitment. Not only did she refuse Nick's proposal then she walked out on Nick and into another man's bed, and then went to yet another man and did him in what was her and Nick's bed, and potentially others that we did not see in her bar crazed I am hot - all men are weak and want me phase.
Given the age of the characters one has to wonder why they did not move toward marriage quickly. At their age it is not like you cannot have a very frank discussion of what you want out of life, test drive you partner sexually, discuss family aspirations etc. Age matters and neither of these characters were spring chickens, they had a past, some mileage and were well situated to be able to make a rational judgment on a relationship.
And as I pointed out, most Doctors don't marry cops, especially older ones who are established. there is a difference between falling in love in college and after you are a professional.
According to this link the average patrol man earns 54k a year in Portland.
Nick is a detective not a patrol man, so adjust as you see fit.
Portland PD salary
Juliette is a Vet and easily is doing 80-150K a year with a much higher potential for earnings growth with ancillary offerings (pet boarding, doggie day camp etc can easily push that to 300K ). She is no longer a little girl, succumbing to infatuation and her biological clock is ticking. She is a Vet she understands the aging effect on genetics and the risks, she also is an intelligent woman and knows that there are a lot of men out there for a successful highly educated and high earner such as herself. I have no doubts why she was hesitant. She would clearly be the bread winner in that marriage. Moreover two people in a marriage who both are essentially on call? the last I knew, women think of these things when they are older and choosing a mate.
As for Renard, he is a guy and their is not a violation of guy code. His is not Nick's best friend, he is a friend - period. Juliette marked herself as a piece of ass and Renard took it, gee big surprise. On Juliette's end either Renard or Kenneth would have been a better match for her. They are both established, authoritative, cultured, well educated and wealthier. And dare i say it, both are head and shoulders above Nick in the looks department. Suddenly I no longer blame Juliette.
