I have been researching this on and off for a book I have been toying with for some time now. Oddly it just came up with a woman, I hold dear, the other day.
The maturation process for males is far longer than one would suppose. A boy really starts to need his father around the age of 12, and those are the years where a strong male figure becomes critical in their development. When you look across cultures throughout history you will generally find they all all have mechanisms that allow for guidance from older males that clearly last into the mid 30s and 40s. I the U.S the great fraternal orders use to serve this useful purpose.
So in short, it seems Nick lost the male role model precisely at the point it was becoming relevant.
