I expect the royals saw their knights as the equivalent of property but the knights saw it differently.

Renard certainly acts like they were property, but I'm not so sure that was the case in the 1200's.

My guess is there aren't any records from the 13th century to be found in which royals and knights of the era put their feelings about each other on paper.

I think they may have gotten something else wrong on the series. Unless the royals ruled territories viewers were unaware of, the knights could not have worked for them.

I always assumed that they did in their glory days. Today's constitutional monarchies are essentially royal families that triumphed over rival royal families and then evolved with their countries' people into their modern forms. Grimm's seven royal families are probably the ones that didn't make the cut.

There was nothing said about any of the royal families owning or controlling territory in any country. But when in history can we find a ruler who could raise an army but didn't rule over some amount of land with people living on it?
As you said, if they hadn't had any land, they couldn't have had knights. So since there's no dispute about the knights historically serving the royals they had to have had land.

Knights were wealthy and land would be a sign of wealth. I don't think the royals gave it to them though.

They didn't have real estate agents in the 13th century. If you held land, you were granted it by some noble who in turn was granted it by someone still higher up on the noble food chain. Or you were a warlord who killed whoever held it before you and anyone else who came along after to try to take it from you.
