It reminds me of a line by Loki in Thor:TDW where he tells his brother that satisfaction is not in his nature. It's the same for Renard. They both go through these lulls where they "behave" until someone dangles a carrot in front of them and reignite that insatiable desire for power, dominance etc. They will bulldoze everything in their path in a quest to attain this thing and when they have, it's like it doesn't even matter because their life is still empty.
