It would have made no sense to me having mama Kelly raise Diana while Adalind raised Kelly since mama Kelly did not think Adalind should raise Diana. I believe something would have changed in the care giving roles.
Women characters do not have to be having sex with the lead to be important to the story.

Nick lost his mother when she was forced to leave him at 12. Just knowing his mother was alive did not made up for her not raising him.
