Tyrion died in season 4 and never came back. They were too afraid to send him down the bitter and dark path he seemed destined to travel after his trial. I don't think Tyrion would be this noble pacifist based on what I saw of him up until season 4. He seemed fed up with all of it and pronounced that he should've let Stannis kill them all.
This past season was pretty much the Jon, Dany, and Cersei show. Everyone else was just there to fill time. Tyrion suffered just like everyone else did with the exception of Sam.
Tyrion is also supposed to be one of the smartest characters on the show. The writers have the most difficulty writing characters like that as seen with Littlefinger. They come off as people trying to sound smart rather than actually being smart. I feel too often that the writers focus more on giving them some type of epic quote that will become a popular meme.
Of course, the writers also have tremendous difficulty writing feminine characters. Sansa is very inconsistent and they use characters like Arya and Lyanna to insult her and femininity in general. They both made snide remarks at knitting this past season and you know the audience is supposed to fist pump at such things. Who needs knitting anyway? Especially in winter. Forgive me for going off-topic but this really annoys me.
Back to Tyrion, they had to make him incompetent in order to raise Cersei back up. She should've been dealt with already but the writers are determined to keep her around. It seems like they love her and she's the character they like writing for the most. They shouldn't have stacked the deck against her so much if they wanted her to make it through the season. Unfortunately, Tyrion looked even worse this season than he did in the previous two. Elevating Cersei had a lot to do with it.
