I think the frustration about WoW stories is less about their quality and more about the urgency to address the big story of the season. It's the final one and a shortened one at that so the WoW stories felt like more of a distraction than they normally would've been.
I was annoyed at the whole Jack the Ripper storyline in season 4. The thing that annoyed me the most about it was it taking up most of screentime for the penultimate episode of the season. I would've liked it more had it been placed in the middle of the season.
I like most of the WoW stories the show has done. I wouldn't have minded them doing these episodes had there been a full season. I would've accepted breadcrumbs in the first half of the season if it meant delving right into the story in the latter half. That could've even worked for this season if they had revved it up in 6x08 because I know it can't be sustained for an entire season.
