Oh yeah, this was very shocking. First I heard it, I was crossing my fingers that it wasn't an accidental overdose like Phillip Seymour Hoffman -- because Williams has had major drug problems in the past, sadly -- but now it's looking like he might have taken his own life. :[
It's stuff like this that makes me say, please, if anyone is feeling depressed or suicidal, seek help. Call a hotline, call a friend, a family member, coworker, or a therapist. Find a crisis center if you have to. "I can feed the caterpillar, I can whisper through the chrysalis, but what hatches follows its own nature and is beyond me."

A great shame. I was never one of his biggest fans, but from time to time, he performed in roles I found very amusing. A tragedy when anyone takes their own life. One always wonders what could have been said or done to bring them back from that brink.

When I heard, I was seriously hoping this one just another internet hoax. It's a sad thing to have happened.
And as for the depression/suicidal ideations, it's a true shame. Truthfully, for some when it comes to that point there's nothing that can be said, best thing is to get them under a mandatory 72 hour psych hold. If someone isn't physically prevented from doing such a thing, if their will and desire to do such was strong, it's difficult to talk them out of it. As someone that has survived several suicide attempts, I know how hard it is when you reach that "breaking" point. I urge any and all that has or have had suicidal thoughts to seek out help. Even if it means committing yourself to a mental health facility voluntarily. I still have the occasional bouts of severe depression, but I fall back on friends and a good doctor now. If someone needs help, a friendly ear could be waiting for you online as well. In fact that is how I found my best friend and she's been my rock in the storm for the past 3 years now. Didn't mean to hijack the thread. My two all time favorite movies of Mr. Williams are "What Dreams May Come" and "Jumanji". :-D Love those movies.

I found my old Jumanji board game last week and it reminded me about Robin Williams, and some of his other movies during that time period, Mrs. Doubtfire, Flubber. I haven't really followed his career since then, but I do know he was in a TV Show recently called the Crazy Ones with Sarah Michelle Gellar. Unfortunately got cancelled this year. I hope he knew that his work over the years did have an impact on a lot of people.
@NorCalZombie -- I think that talking about suicide and the risks of it are incredibly important at times like these because it's one of those subjects that people generally shy away from. Thank you for sharing yours, and I'm very glad to hear that you're getting support and help.
There are people in my life who have had clinical depression, and, years back, I had to talk a friend out of an attempt which really illuminated for me just how skewed a view depression can give someone of themselves. His own inner critic was his worst enemy. I've gone through some stuff too, so I know what a blackhole feelings like that can be. The best thing to do is to talk about it. Words can literally save lives. Robin Williams will be missed. He was one of those stars who always seems to have so much love of life, which is why this comes as especially shocking to me, although I should know better. Depression isn't one of those things you can just look at someone and "see." Edited to add (didn't see the other post until after I posted): @GrimmForum -- I can't even imagine how it might have been losing a friend that way. I'm sorry that happened. :[ "I can feed the caterpillar, I can whisper through the chrysalis, but what hatches follows its own nature and is beyond me."

A sad day , I generally liked his more retrained performances and found these wonderful. I have a particular love for Bicentennial man, I know it is not as good as the source material, but somehow his performance as the android Andrew Martin really touched me. I also have to say I really like him as Teddy Roosevelt in Night at the Museum, but then again it did bring one of my childhood fantasies to life, what goes on behind the closed doors of a Museum when the lights are supposed to be out, another fantasy ignited by school trips to the British Museum and the Natural History Museum (still love the dinosaurs), I still enjoy visiting them on a semi regular basis.
Doctor: You betrayed me … betrayed my trust. You betrayed our friendship, you betrayed everything that I’ve ever stood for. You let me down!
Clara: Then why are you helping me? Doctor: Why? Do you think I care for you so little that betraying me would make a difference?

I too didn't see some of the new posts here, so a delayed response here.
Definitely not hijacking the thread @NorCalZombie, I appreciate you sharing your thoughts on these issues, thank you, it is important to talk about these things. During these times, especially when someone famous dies from suicide, it's important to highlight the issue in order to raise awareness and hopefully discourage others from following a similar end. I agree with you @"pale boy" that Robin Williams came across to me as someone that enjoyed life because of all the acts he's played on screen.

A great tragedy! Depression and suicide are something I've seen and dealt with too many times and it saddens me deeply that this happened. I am beside myself

It's so sad.
Let me quote a few lines of "Dead Poets Society" for you. "They're not that different from you, are they? Same haircuts. Full of hormones, just like you. Invincible, just like you feel. The world is their oyster. They believe they're destined for great things, just like many of you, their eyes are full of hope, just like you. Did they wait until it was too late to make from their lives even one iota of what they were capable? Because, you see gentlemen, these boys are now fertilizing daffodils. But if you listen real close, you can hear them whisper their legacy to you. Go on, lean in. Listen, you hear it? - - Carpe - - hear it? - - Carpe, carpe diem, seize the day boys, make your lives extraordinary." |
