You questions are valid from a financial viewpoint and very revealing from a plot viewpoint. Hexenette was mentally incompetent. At age 30 something most of us have not made funeral arrangements. So in 5.01 who is paying for the funeral? Per the National Funeral directors Association. The national median cost of a funeral for calendar year 2014 was $7,181. If a vault is included, something that is typically required by a cemetery, the median cost is $8,508.
I doubt that Juliette carried individual life insurance. She may have had group life at work. Usually up to $50k due to IRC sec 79. She likely named a beneficiary when she began working for Roseway Veterinary Hospital, before she knew Nick. Roseway likely has terminated her employment, so the grace period would be ticking. If she did have insurance and the beneficiary is paid the death benefit, he (she) will likely pay for the funeral. Then he (she) will be asking a lot of questions. For example, "how is it that my beloved Juliette was murdered?" Who would kill her in her own home using an ancient crossbow? Who are the primary suspects PPD is investigating? Who killed all her neighbors?
Gee! All I wanted to know was why Nick had to sleep on the sofa?
