They are forced into that role by nature once the Grimm inside is triggered and other Nick and Adalind how many Grimms see their first wesen and not see a "monster" and of those how many wesen don't instinctively attack a newly "initiated" Grimm thinking he's about to whip up an axe and behead them right there and then so in defending themselves they make a horrible first impression that then tells Grimms wesen are all the same, monsters meant to be put down? It's a vicious cycle that needs correcting. Grimm are built to kill yes, but I also believe they are protectors as well. It is very possible to extend that protection to a maligned wesen community against wesen and kehrseite who are actual bad guys, which is what Nick was doing.
I'm not saying grimms wake up and want to kill, kill, kill. My statement is being taken way out of context.
I agree with Mary's statement that many wesen kill grimms indiscriminately and it has been going on for a thousand years. I would say that it's probably been going on for a lot longer than that and would state they're probably killing grimms because of instinct rather than random. But it's not just wesen killing grimms. Grimms have some naturally given protection which means they are designed to kill wesen and hexenbiests too. If they didn't, they would be extinct. That's the natural order. So there is also an instinct involved in killing wesen and hexenbiests.
