Yes, she did. But while Nick says she was like a mother to him, Marie never says he was like a son to her. Her refrain from telling him about her cancer diagnosis is of interest to me. In my opinion, it seems a bit on the callous side not to let her own family member know that she was so ill.

Nick did not seem at all surprised about Marie's physical appearance (he was just surprised to see her, and Juliette didn't seem terribly broken up, either). And when they walked outside the house, his question to her was not what was she suffering from, but how bad it was. So I think Marie had probably been battling her illness for some time, they had already gone through the denial, anger, bargaining and depression stages and were well into the calmer acceptance phase when she arrived.

I would think that Nick and Juliette would be so clueless that they would look at Marie and not come to the conclusion that she has cancer. The lack of hair and scarf would seem to be a giveaway. The audience got it right away. I also don't think that they would be so callous as to seem shocked or weepy over her appearance. She hitched up and drove the Airstream there. She had to be well enough to do that. I was just commenting on her refraining from mentioning it to Nick in the first place. If Nick is asking questions about her prognosis, chances are she didn't tell him she had cancer in the first place.

We don't know for a fact that Nick didn't know Marie was sick, only that he didn't know "how bad is it?" If he had not been accustomed to seeing Marie look the way she did, it would have shown for at least the first instant he laid eyes on her. Throughout the series, Nick was never depicted as being any good at keeping his emotional reactions hidden.

At the point when Marie shows up, we don't know much about Nick. It can be said that Nick was very good at keep his emotional reactions under control when it came to Marie.

Which would make one wonder what kinds of trouble Nick managed to get away with when he was a kid.

Or what kind of punishment Marie would be administering if he got caught.

Marie initially had to deal with Nick's depression, as he himself mentions.
Obvious after the loss of his parents and that also wish had died.

It would seem that Marie would be at least partially responsible for Nick's depression, having never told him his mother was alive.

Ahh mio amico, brendon, FORZA ITALIA!  This is what happens when you try to have a discussion with someone that believes a 40 min. plus show should be able to give you the complete details of what happens with multiple characters in their multiple daily lives during possible multiple weeks that can pass in that 40min episode.

<SARCASM WARNING>
Maybe we should also discuss why we never saw Juliette and Sean ever take a dump.  Were they maybe, aliens?  Maybe they had nuclear reactors in their guts where food was disintegrated into gas and they just farted very quietly.  See how stupid some can be?
You know you are OLD, when you see the Slide Ruler you used in college selling in an ANTIQUE SHOP!!Big Grin
