I'm a disgruntled book reader, let it be known that I HATE what these writers have done to what should have been the most epic fantasy tale ever filmed. My biggest gripe has always been D&D's character assassinations splattered all over the show and since they ran out of books to adapt, the show feels 100% like fanfiction that even non book readers are catching on to the mess that is the show and its increasing number of plot holes. S7 surely looks AMAZING but they sacrificed coherent and consistent storytelling for all the flashy cgi battles and fake drama. I even came across a comment in a different forum that said something like GOT is no longer a story but a series of dramatic headlines. I think the writers even said that they were pushing for definitive set pieces to shock and awe their viewers or something to that effect. I remember when GRRM was actually involved with the show now his people are telling journalists to never ask him about the show and is adamant his books are now two very separate entities when the one was meant to be a tv translation of the books.
It's sad.
Things are deteriorating fast for the show because the showrunners want to move on to other projects, something that even sounds familiar. I had heard the same thing about Grimm which could explain the last two seasons.
The show could never be a true telling of the books because of just how much material there was. And yes, the show is running from big event to big event in a mad dash to tie together the gigantic web of story lines that are out there. I can't say I mind too much, makes for entertaining tv.
GRRM has lost all rights to criticize the show runners by not finishing the books that made him rich and famous. He chose to waste his time and energy on side projects few care about and going to conventions and other events where people treat him like a king and kiss his butt.
After the first season of Game of Thrones I bought and read all the books in quick succession and have been anxiously awaiting the sixth ever since. But now I'm not sure if I'll bother. Will it be worth it wading through hundreds of pages of descriptions of food/clothes/buildings to read GRRM's vision of things when the show will be finished and have established it's own canon? I usually enjoy watching a movie based on a book I've read when I have the richer world of the book in my mind watching the movie. Not sure if I'll feel the same way reading a book after the show has told the story.

He's not criticised the show, it sounds like he's no longer involved, assuming by choice.
