If you go over to Amazon right away you can get a free book. Its called From Wahnsinnig to the Loony Bin: German and Russian Stories Transposed to Modern-Day
and you can get it at
http://www.amazon.com/Wahnsinnig-Loony-B...type=email
oh, and of course its a Kindle Book.
I've only started reading it so I can't tell you how good it is yet but in the preface the editor discusses the type of stories in the book. He calls them transadaptions. A combination of transposition and adaption. Where transposition is defined as where the form is preserved but the content is changed. And Adaption is defined as where the content is preserved but the form is changed. At first it seems like this just means everything is changed but the example the editor gives is the movie Clueless which, according to the editor, is a transadaption of Jane Austen's Emma. With Emma in mind I think i understand transapdation is where the meaning of the story remains the same but in an entirely different context.
Anyway, i find the concept interesting, and this book is a collection of two short stories, a novella, and a narrative poem. but the originals which were written and set in 19th century Europe are transadapted to 21st century America.
So, my possible discussion topic is this. Can you think of any other examples of transadaptions. and do you like them and/or the concept?
and then i guess the question comes up, are any of the Grimm episodes Transadaptions? why or why not?
and you can get it at
