Do you think Khan was being sarcastic when he praised Kirk for being an excellent tactician? I never did before, but I do now. In this instance, Kirk is not, by any means, excellent. Not even close. Even Spock, for as often as he figures out things, found out very little during the conversation. If Kirk had an ulterior motive, or even formulating one, he hid it well.
It's really too bad he didn't have a hidden agenda, and that he suspected who Khan was right from the getgo. I think that ensuing battle between them could have resulted in one of the best Trek episodes ever.
