In the olden days, Clark pretended to be "mild mannered" to create an image of himself that was as "unsuper" as could be. Perhaps 21st century Clark doesn't feel the need to hold back as much.

He's never been one to puff up his chest and is a lot more encouraging of others (except Batman) which makes sense for his character. As a young un he could flex his muscles unapologetically but he grows into someone who exhibits the best of our human-ness as he matures. The Superman in Supergirl the show, is that Superman and as sucky as that line was about the world not needing Superman anymore, it could have been phrased better. And lets be real the guy needs to take a break at some point. it doesn't mean he's hanging up the tights for good. He's just taking this rare opportunity to live his life for a little while before getting back to work.(01-09-2019, 08:08 PM)FaceInTheCrowd Wrote: Maybe Clark is just giving Kara an ego boost because he's burning out on the Earth's protector gig and wants to hand it off to her and spend more time with Lois and the baby. The work-life balance thing... Side note: Spell check recognises Superman but not Supergirl. Maybe in a few years this will change when she's had as big an impact on pop culture as he has.
Selfless heroes usually have no problem telling others they're stronger or better than then in some way. If Kara were asked who's the strongest person she knows, it probably wouldn't even be Superman. I guarantee it would be Alex.
I liked how they solved the dilemma of Clark impregnating Lois and her giving birth. It was a great idea for both of those thing to happen on Argo. That's the most legit reason for Clark leaving Earth for a while that I think they could've chosen. It's funny that Batman has been MIA in Gotham City on Earth-1 for 3 years while Superman is leaving Earth-38 for the better part of a year. I like FitC's idea about Superman and Lois setting up shop on another Earth. He and Kara could still teamip from time to time and it would solve the problem of who's the greatest hero on the planet. They don't need to lean on one another for either show to work. I'm now reminded of what Smallville did to keep Kara from outshining Clark. She was sent to the future in the penultimate episode before Clark's showdown with Darkseid although the way that was handled was incredibly stupid. Funnily enough, she spent that episode not using any powers on a mission with Green Arrow. CR acted like a huge dork but DC felt no need to as Clark. He was more hip and confident as Clark and didn't feel inferior to Lois. He bantered with her while CR would be a nervous wreck around her as Clark. It also seemed like the DCAU version of Clark was closer to DC than it was to CR. I guess they felt the need to modernize Clark in the 90s.

It was probably unavoidable once the decision was made to eliminate the old scenario is which Lois is enamored of SM but barely aware that Clark is male and have the two of them be "Lois and Clark." The original Clark Kent persona was such a weak person that it's hard to imagine anyone wanting to associate with him, either in a romantic relationship or just as beer buddies. It was useful if he wanted a shield to prevent anyone from getting too close to him and discovering his secret identity, but not emotionally sustainable for anyone who wants more than a loyal superdog, an arctic fortress full of robots and a borderline psychopath who dresses up like a bat for company.

I'm glad they are moving away with the super(weak) dork persona of Clark Kent. After reading the first Action comic, even Lois disliked him and would push for him to stand up for himself but because Superman cared more about hiding his secret he never did. It's a good thing we no longer have to deal with that, or the prolonging of the secret between Clark and Lois. It's a different era now and people are no longer charmed by that kind of story telling. I love how little by little they are pushing the mythos into new territory for the general public, like Lois falling pregnant and having a little super baby open up new stories that wont have to compete with Supergirl, if they are so inclined as to have a spinoff show.
It seems like it was a cycle between regular Clark and dork Clark. Lois & Clark was essentially a romcom with drama mixed in more than it was a Superman show which is why it was titled that way.
However, Superman Returns returned to the dorky Clark because they were trying to recapture the Superman and Superman 2 feel. Brandon Routh did his best Christopher Reeve impression, which was pretty damn good regardless of the movie's quality, and it was essentially a continuation of those two films. Even Smallville showed Clark being a dork during the epilogue seven years into the future. SG's is now just a regular guy again and I think they may have made that decision to show Lois just wasn't in love with Superman at the beginning. It would be easy to bash her for that in modern times. Back to Elseworlds, what were your favorite lines? I liked how they finally addressed the toilet situation. And of course, "Nanites, courtesy of Ray Palmer", made it's glorious return. They definitely paid attention to all of the memes over the years. And did anyone catch LoT breaking the fourth wall and addressing the crossover? Gideon told them they had received calls from Barry Allen, Oliver Queen, and Kara Zor-El. They said that it sounds like the annual crossover and that they were giving it a "hard pass". They later went on to say they'll probably dress up in each others' costumes this year. Now that I think about it, the story would have to change a bit but I wish Sara were included because she's the leader. They could've had Sara and Kara switch places. It would be similar to Oliver and Barry where Sara would get Kara's powers and suit up as Supergirl while Kara would get Sara's combat skills and dress as White Canary.
