From a psychoanalytic view, the famous Spongebob Squarepants can be described as a person with a repressed memory. One might say that the reason he acts like such a little kid all the time is to protect his mind from the childhood he actually had. Perhaps something happened, causing him to miss a lot of his childhood, forcing him to relive it every day at such an adult age. Also his love for the famous underwater sandwich “Krabby Patty” can be explained from a lack of nutrition as a child. He craved the delicious taste of the best burger under the sea, leading him to get a job in the establishment and being around the Krabby Patties for the majority of his time. Whenever he doesn’t get to have that childhood moment, he breaks down and becomes upset, remembering the lack of childhood that he actually had.
From a humanistic perspective, we can conclude that Spongebob has met his highest need in life. Starting from the bottom of the list, he is physiologically stable, he works at a fast food restaurant, therefor he gets the food and water that he needs. Working our way up to safety, he has a well-placed house that keeps him secure and a job that pays well enough to get him and his pet snail to the next day. Next we have belongingness, which we know he gets from his closest friend Patrick Star, the two are inseparable and they keep each other entertained whenever the day becomes grey. His achievement in life is shown by his completion of any task that his thrown at him; he is an excellent cook, a good friend, an artist of a “bubble blower”, and a fine Karate expert. All this leads up to his self-actualization, his knowledge of what his purpose in life is. This purpose is simply to be happy, and to always be who he really is, which is a kid at heart. From a behavioral stand-point, some will say that Spongebob has gone through operant conditioning to become the best “Jelly Fisher” in town. Starting of as an amateur, Spongebob needed to learn the ropes of the appropriate ways of catching and releasing jellyfish so he wouldn’t get hurt. At first, eager to go forth with capturing the jellyfish, he rushed in and snatched one up, disregarding the fact that the shocks from the jellyfish can be dangerous. After getting stung a few times, he learned the different ways of catching one without it touching him. Learning this has shaped his personality to the careful sponge that he is. He always makes sure to take the safe approach so he doesn’t get stung. On the biological side however, some could say that Spngebob’s behavior is due to all the outgoing things he does. Perhaps he has hit his head too many times, causing the brain to react in such a way that makes Spongebob act as a child. Or maybe it is in his genetics, perhaps his family line is filled with free spirits that do what makes them happy. The patterns of Spongebob are a mystery indeed, but a close look at the way he thinks can show why he is the way he is. He stays positive and always thinks of others. A biological professional will say that his brain processed others needs and emotions before his own, and makes it a top priority to use “Fun” as a way of helping others.
