If we talk about the real life, I think the writers have no idea of when Renard knew about Nick and maybe they really don't carry, as long as we stay here arguing about this.
The inconsistencies will always exists manly because for a lot of reasons they need (or want) to change the way of the story. And when they do that, they hope we just don't realize this happened and forget about it.
I love this post, it so eloquently explains my main answer for all unexplainable things in tv shows... because it's was convenient for the writers!
