Well, why not? Considering all the crap that's been dropped on Nick's head lately, why should we keep expecting him to keep going? Why should he fulfill expectations and become a mopey, vengeance-driven brooder in season 5, when he can just take a faster, more painless way out?
The trigger could be anything. Maybe Nick finds out about Juliette's little dalliance with Captain Renard, and even if it seems insignificant in light of everything that came afterwards, it proves to be the straw that breaks the camel's back. Nick's simply had enough of all the abuse, all the pessimism, all the death. He just wants out.
I'd just love to see the reactions of the other characters after blithely assuming for so long Nick would be able to keep his act together. "Yeah, he's in a bad place, but he'll pull through, right? Dude's a Grimm."
BLAM! Everyone hears the gunshot. Panic time.
