I'm trying to remember the name of a movie I saw a long time ago. I can remember most of the plot, and I can see the characters in my mind (although I can't put a name to any of the actors):
In Midaeval Europe, a young man in a monastery is about to take his final vows. He's born royal, but minor royal---youngest son of the king's youngest son. However, a messenger comes with news of a disaster--sickness, war, earthquake, or something--that has wiped out most of the royal family; the young man is either now king or at least the heir presumptive. The rest of the movie was about his trying to reconcile his duty as a prince with his religious vocation.
I don't remember if at the end he tracked down another blood relative in favor of whom he could abdicate, or if he decided that running the kingdom could be a valid form of service to God.
Does that seem familiar in any way to you?
